Metal Foil Resistor Packs 5 W into 2818 Case Size
Date:2019-06-10
Microhm Electronics announced a surface-mount metal foil current sensing resistor designed to save space in automotive, industrial, computer, and consumer applications. The NMS2818 combines a high 5 W power rating with extremely low resistance values down to 4 mR in the compact 2818 case size.
The advanced construction of the NMS2818 resistor incorporates improved thermal management and a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element with low TCR. This results in a high-power resistor in the 2818 package size that maintains the superior electrical characteristics and performance of the power metal foil construction, such as excellent 1,000-hour load life stability and very good resistance to short time overload of < ± 1 %.

The device's high power to footprint size ratio allows designers to save board space and create smaller end products by replacing larger resistors with similar power capability and multiple devices with lower power ratings.

The AEC-Q200-qualified resistor is ideal for all types of precision current sensing, voltage division, and high power pulse load applications, including current detectors, switching regulators, power supplies and power amplifiers in automotive electronic controls such as engine, injector, anti-lock brakes, brushless DC motors, climate, and battery management controls.

The NMS2818 also fits into industrial controls, including down-hole test/measurement equipment for oil/gas well drilling; motor drives and DC/DC converters for servers, inverter controls for HVAC systems; VRMs for computers, and Li-ion battery safety and management.
