Chip Resistor's Merit, Damage Reason and Solution
Date:2019-04-22
Chip resistors mainly refers to thick film resistor, thin film resistor and metal foil resistor. The first two are traditional and most popular ones. Recent years, metal foil resistors are become popular for its higher precision, lower TCR, and lower inductance as it  is  manufactured by alloy resistor materials, including constantan, manganin and more. The size of them can be as small to 0603.

The chip resistor is inevitably damaged during the application process. The reasons might be misoperation, service condition or brand. There are many types of chip resistor damage. It is considered that the damage is also damaged by the operation. It also has a great relationship with the use of the chip resistor and the production of the chip resistor brand. Below, we list the reasons for the damage of common chip resistors.

Below we list the reasons for the damage of common chip resistors.

1. The quality of the chip resistor is not good enough. The variety of chip resistors on the market is easy to buy, but not original.

2. The voltage of the chip resistor in the circuit becomes higher instantly, the lightning strike or surge voltage is too high, and the internal resistance of the power network is small, and the protection of the patch resistance of the power network is destroyed by breakdown, which leads to all the over-voltage being added to the rectifier bridge.

3. The output voltage of the chip resistor is too low, so that the rectifier bridge is relieved and damaged. The rear-stage circuit and the inverter power switching device are damaged, causing the rectifier bridge to flow through the short-circuit current and be damaged.

4. The distance between the chip resistor and the power transformer is too close. The line impedance at both ends is very small. The inverter does not have a DC reactor and an output AC reactor, so that the rectifier bridge is under the impact mode of high-amplitude pulse current of the capacitor filter and causes premature failure of the rectifier bridge.

Damage to the chip resistor will inevitably have a serious impact on the entire circuit. In order to solve the problem of chip resistor damage, many engineers will replace the new rectifier bridge and chip resistor device, to ensure that the rectifier bridge is welded firmly and keep a safe distance from the surrounding devices. In addition, the circuit should be coated with silicone grease to reduce the heat of the resistor too high. Moreover, it is necessary to use the same type and the same manufacturer's products for the parallel rectifier bridge to prevent the current from being unevenly damaged.

Compared with ordinary chip resistors, the advantages of patch alloy resistance are very obvious. The most popular patch alloy resistor on the market is a resistor using alloy as current medium. This chip alloy resistor has low resistance, high precision, low temperature coefficient, withstand current, high power and so on. Such patch alloy resistors are commonly found in a variety of electronic products, mainly used in current sampling, or short circuit protection. Relative to the chip thick film resistor, the former chip resistance accuracy is generally 1% and 5%, and the patch alloy resistance can reach 1% or even higher.
