Heat Sinks for ICs and Resistors

IC designs and many high power resistors utilize heat sink to dissipate heat so as to keep reasonable temperature for normal operation and performance. A heat sink is an important but often overlooked component.
Q: A simple but obvious question: what is used as the material for heat sinks?
