Application of slotted and Unslotted Shunt in Battery Management System

Shunt resistor can be used in many electronic products. It consist of slot shunt and non-slot shunt. These two types of shunt are widely used in automotive electronic products, especially in battery management systems. In the case of Tesla's new-energy electric vehicle, the use of precision dividers gives it a competitive advantage over other cars in the industry, which we would also call automotive grade resistors.

In new energy automotive electronics, automotive shunt is usually made of Mn-Ni-Cu alloy resistance rod and copper strip, and there are generally nickel-plated layers. This automotive shunt has a rated pressure drop of 60mV, but can also be used as a 75, 100, 120, 150 and 300 mV. This kind of automotive shunt is used for DC current detection, mainly in slot type and non-slot type.

Many new energy vehicles adopt the method of choosing 501W/BP chokes when choosing automotive shunt. According to the current meter or current-voltage dual-purpose meter, the rated voltage drop specification of the shunt is selected according to the number of mV indicated on the dial. Generally, 75mV or 45mV is commonly used. If the ammeter used does not have this value, the voltage limit of the meter is calculated by the following formula, and then the rated voltage drop specification of the shunt is selected. The voltage limit of the meter (mV) = the internal resistance (Ω) x current when ammeter fully calibrated / 1000. Select the rated current specifications of the shunt according to the current range to be expanded. When the two current terminals of the selected shunt are connected to the power supply and the load respectively, the terminal polarity of the ammeter should be connected to the ammeter at the potential end, and the measurement range of the ammeter is extended to the current value calibrated on the automobile shunt.

The current ratings of slot shunt are as follows: 5 A, 10 A, 15 A, 20 A and 25 A. The rated current of non-slot shunt varies from 30 A to 15 kA. The most commonly used automotive shunt products are FL type. At present, many customers choose to customize the automotive shunt, according to the different battery management system.
